The AI vampire (full take)

The AI vampire (full take)

I heard a term on Joe Rogan's podcast this week that I can't stop thinking about: the AI vampire. The assumption goes like this. AI makes engineers faster, so tickets close quicker, bugs get squashed quicker, features ship quicker. Surely we can all finally sit back and relax. Except every engineer I know who's gone deep on AI is working longer hours than before. Me included. Coding used to come with natural stopping points. The build is running. You're stuck. The next task is a four-hour job, so it waits for tomorrow. That friction is where rest used to live. AI removed the friction. Now the next fix is always 15 minutes away. The feature is always almost done. One more prompt, one more review, one more quick win before bed. There's no point in the loop where stopping feels natural. I spend less time typing and far more time reviewing, verifying, steering. Babysitting parallel agent sessions is its own kind of tired. That's the vampire. It doesn't take your job. It takes your evenings. Stopping became a skill. Still learning it. What's your rule for logging off?
