To provide more value, it usually has to grow. Growing takes capital. So often the business chooses to go looking for investors. And an investor is buying something, same as any of us. What they're buying is risk. Their job is to price it. At seed, they'll price the team and the market, nobody expects instrumentation yet. But at Series A, the question changes: is this growth engine repeatable? Does a marginal dollar in produce a predictable unit of growth out, from customers who stay, at margins that hold? That's where most raises tend to fall apart. I've watched companies with a genuinely good product and a great customer experience walk into that room unable to answer it. Their marketing spend is inconsistent. It isn't measured correctly. So when they ask for a million dollars, they can't show what a million dollars does. They're not asking the investor to take a risk. Investors take risks for a living. They're asking the investor to price a risk that can't be seen. And unpriceable risk gets one of two treatments: a big fat discount, or a pass. What I build fixes exactly that gap. I gave a friend in KZN advice last week that I'm still not sure he wanted to hear. He's a year younger than me. He's about to start a course in software development and website building. When he told me, I said what I actually believe: that's exciting, tech is the future, go do it. Then I told him the part that matters more. Learn the principles. Write a few lines of code by hand so you understand what's happening underneath. But don't stop there. The moment you're job-hunting, you're competing against someone who writes decent code AND has a well-built AI workflow around it. That person outperforms you in every shape and every angle. Their setup does the heavy lifting while they make the actual decisions. So if you're junior and starting now, the maths is brutal and simple. The person who only codes is racing the person who codes and orchestrates. Same eight hours. Wildly different output. I told him: learn to code, absolutely. Then go one layer higher and learn to direct the tools. That's where a junior in 2026 gets an edge they can't get any other way. I don't say this from theory. A lot of what I know came from working closely with my business partner, who's American, and my mentor, both operating at the frontier. That access opened my eyes to what's possible. Most people starting out don't have it. The tools are the closest thing to it that anyone can pick up for free. Here's the uncomfortable bit for anyone deciding what to study right now. The syllabus won't tell you this. The course will teach you the language. But finding the workflow that makes the language worth half of what it used to be? That's on you to go find.
