To a human, a full life looks impressive. To the algorithm, it looks like static. A clean start outperformed everything I'd built. My old account was haunted. Not in a fun way. The kind where your reach flatlines, your engagement crawls, and the feed keeps serving you content that has nothing to do with anything you care about. Ghosts in the machine, feeding me garbage. So I did the thing I tell clients never to do without a reason. I torched it and started fresh. The gap between what I expected and what actually happened was immediate. A new account with almost no history was already cutting through in ways the old one had stopped doing entirely. Not because the content changed, because the signal did. Here's what actually happened, because it's not magic. The old account had accumulated so much noise over so long that the algorithm couldn't figure out who I was or what to match me with. Years of context switching, breadth, following everyone, engaging with everything. To a human that looks like a full life. To the machine it's noise. The new one is clean. It has almost nothing to go on, which means the little it does have gets weighted properly. I gave it a narrow signal and it matched me fast. That's the uncomfortable part. We resist being put in a box. Nobody wants to be defined by one thing. But narrow is exactly what makes you legible to these platforms. You have to fight your own instinct for breadth if you want the reach. I've spent enough time telling founders their acquisition paths are broken to recognize the same shape in my own account. Wasted signal is wasted signal, whether it's ad spend chasing the wrong customer or a decade of connections confusing the feed. So I'm rebuilding, deliberately this time.
