- LinkedInMeta just launched Muse, their new AI agent that shops for you. The story in TechCrunch says Amazon has already banned it. People trying to use Muse get an error message saying it's not available there. One theory is simple competition. Amazon and Meta are rivals, so Amazon decided no thanks to another company's agent. The other theory is more interesting. Amazon makes a lot of money because returns are easy. If an agent starts buying things on your behalf and getting them wrong, returns could go up fast. Amazon would eat those costs. A lot of vendors are already opening their platforms so agents can connect and buy directly. They see agents as their future customers. This move by Amazon looks like a firm no to that idea, at least for now. I have no interest in Muse. I already have too many agents and don't need another one with a name like that. The whole habit of giving agents human names feels unnecessary. Should agents be allowed to shop for you? If they get it wrong, who carries the cost? You pay the attorney fees to respond. You trade claims. It ends in mediation. You calculate what it takes to make it stop because you don't have the cash to see it through on principle. The people who run this play understand the system better than the owners they target. They keep doing it because it works.
