Everyone says the grid is why global tech will pass South Africa by.…

  1. Everyone says the grid is why global tech will pass South Africa by. Follow the money and that story collapses. Look at where the money is actually landing and the doom narrative doesn't hold. The data center market here was worth about $2.5 billion last year. Roughly 50 billion rand is sitting in the pipeline over the next three years.

  2. Almost all of it clusters around Johannesburg, which holds around 75% of the country's up-and-coming power capacity. Cape Town is pulling attention too. Equinix just announced a 7.5 billion rand expansion, about $438 million, buying land in both cities to chase the AI infrastructure boom.

  3. Equinix only opened their first South African data center in 2024. They're already back for more. We now host over 50 operating data centers. That makes South Africa the biggest digital hub on the continent, and the government is leaning in hard.

  4. National Treasury said earlier this year it wants data centers treated as critical infrastructure, with fast-track incentives to pull more investment in. So the investment is coming, the government is on board, the global AI wave is pushing demand. On paper we are set up to be the digital backbone of Africa.

  5. But these facilities are hungry for electricity and water, and we already have serious shortages of both. That part doesn't get talked about enough. The country's biggest operator says it's investing in renewables, which helps. But the scale being built is growing fast, and the resource pressure is real.

  6. If the power and water story doesn't get solved properly, it becomes a ceiling on everything else being built. Africa holds less than 1% of the world's operational data center capacity. We're bidding to change that, and we're only at the start.
