Most people think AI in African universities is a recent import. It isn't. South African universities have been building AI research for decades. Places like the University of Pretoria and Wits were doing serious work in machine learning and natural language processing long before the current wave. That foundation matters. What's on campuses today grew directly out of that early work. But adoption across South African higher education is nowhere near equal. Universities with dedicated AI research centres, like Wits and its MIND Institute, have industry partnerships, pilot programmes and real infrastructure. That gives them a head start. Smaller institutions are working with far less. The gap is real, and it's widening. That's the part I keep coming back to. We celebrate South Africa's place in the global AI education market. But being part of the story means very little if only the well-resourced universities get to write it. A student at a small institution isn't less capable than one at Wits. They just have less to work with. And the classroom debate has shifted to something that makes it worse. UCT disabled Turnitin's AI detector, and other South African institutions have followed. The reason is stark: one study across seven detection tools found a 61% false positive rate for students writing in a second language, against 5% for native English speakers. Students who already face a resource gap were being flagged twelve times more often, purely because of how they write. Left alone, a gap like that doesn't close on its own. It compounds. The head start becomes a permanent lead, and the students who could have caught up never get the chance.
