The real career risk isn't a bad take. It's being invisible while a competitor says the interesting thing first. If most people are too scared to post on LinkedIn because they think a bad take could dent their career, then who's actually filling the feed? The people who post anyway. And they get outsized reach for it, precisely because everyone else is holding back. So the platform ends up crowded with the safest possible content. "I'm thrilled to announce." "I want to welcome Sarah to the team." Posts that read like a press release wrote them. Meanwhile the actual human experience of building something, the hard calls, the pivots, the problems you're still working through, barely shows up. That's the part people would actually stop scrolling for. Take what I'm doing right now. I'm in the middle of a launch, and the process has been anything but clean. I started with a simple idea, then stress-tested it with real customers and found out the market wanted something fundamentally different. So I scrapped the original positioning, rebuilt around what people actually needed, and started again. That's the messy stuff. It's also the interesting stuff. And almost nobody posts it. Which brings us to the split we keep seeing among execs. One camp treats every post as a risk to manage. Sand off the edges, run it past three people, publish something no one will remember by lunch. The other camp treats a post as a chance to say something true about the work. Riskier on paper. Far better on results. Same platform. Same audience. Two completely different bets on what your name is worth. We think the fear is misplaced. The real risk is being invisible while your competitors say the interesting thing first. If you're a CEO or founder deciding what goes out under your name this week, look at your last five posts. Were any of them sharp enough that a stranger would screenshot them?
