Nobody caused the graduate unemployment spike by accident. Companies did it to themselves. Graduate unemployment jumped from 8.7% to 11.5% in a single quarter. Same quarter, senior job ads are still running, still demanding experience.
/7The story companies tell themselves is clean. AI handles the grunt work now, so we don't need juniors anymore. Efficiency. That's what they call it.
/7Here's what AI cannot do. It won't sit in a meeting for three years and learn how your clients actually think, or build judgment from making small mistakes at low stakes. And it will never grow into your head of engineering. That only happens when you hire someone young and teach them.
/7That's the deal. That has always been the deal. Someone gives a 22-year-old room to mess up, and five years later you've got the senior you're now struggling to hire.
/7It doesn't matter if you're a two-person shop or a corporate drowning in headcount. The threshold question is the same, and everyone's skipping it. The senior talent you can't find right now, where do you think it came from? Someone hired them. Someone had to give them a shot.
/7Youth unemployment for 15 to 24 year olds is now 60.9%. McKinsey warns automation could take half a million SA manufacturing jobs by 2030. The pressure is real. I'm not pretending it isn't.
/7Adapting to AI is one thing. Cutting off your own supply of future leaders is another. Reshape junior roles for a world with AI, fine. But skip the human development phase entirely and you shouldn't act surprised when there's nobody left to lead. Every senior you rely on was grown by someone who took the risk before you did.
