Pretoria, Wits, quietly running machine learning and natural language research while most of the world was still catching up. What's happening on campuses right now didn't come from nowhere. It came from that.

2. But the field isn't level. Wits has a dedicated research institute, industry partnerships, pilot programs, real infrastructure. Smaller universities are working with a fraction of that. And the gap between the two keeps getting wider.

3. Students are driving a lot of this themselves, and three things decide whether they stick with a tool. Does it fit how they actually learn? Does it give them a real edge? Do they feel confident enough to use it? Where all three line up, adoption is fast. Where they don't, students fall behind.

4. Pretoria has already published formal guidelines on using ChatGPT responsibly. That's a university saying out loud that this is here, it's real, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.

5. The global AI education market sat at 7 billion USD in 2025. It's forecast past 10 billion by 2026. South Africa is in that story. But I keep circling back to one worry. A student's access to all this still depends too much on which university they happened to land at.
