- LinkedInAfrica's compute lives here. Most of it in one city. We are also barely in the AI race. Sit with that for a second. We host the continent's compute. We are two or three years behind the US and Europe on actually using it. Here's the scale of what's sitting here. Teraco is one operator. Its two Johannesburg campuses account for 173MW of critical power load once JB7 comes online. Its entire national footprint is 228MW. Johannesburg is three quarters of it. One operator. One city. Now think about where we're doing this. A grid we load-shed on for years. A city that keeps running out of water. Around 450mm of rain a year, if we're lucky. One megawatt of data centre capacity can drink 25 million litres of that water annually. Meanwhile the countries with actual grid headroom are pushing back. New York froze new data centre permits for a year. Seven in ten Americans say they don't want one near them. Around $130 billion of projects were blocked or delayed in a single quarter. And us? We're courting it. Microsoft has already put in R20.5 billion, with another R5.5 billion planned for Centurion. To be fair, operators are not ignoring the constraints. JB7 runs closed-loop chilled water and direct free-air cooling. Teraco is building a 120MW solar plant that feeds back into the Eskom grid. They argue our sites are smaller than American hyperscale facilities and are not running heavy AI training. Those are real answers. Today. But "true today" is not the same as true when demand scales. The country with the least room on its grid is competing hardest for the thing that needs the most power. That is not automatically a bad deal. We need the investment. We need the jobs. We do not want to be a digital backwater. It is just a deal nobody asked us about. And we haven't really reckoned with what it means. We're taking the load. We're taking the water risk. We're not yet taking the upside. What would it look like if we actually did?
