Everybody's suddenly talking about regulating AI. It started with that researcher who quit Anthropic last week and said it could kill us all in ten years. The media picked it up, then the politicians, and now the heads of the big labs are saying they agree. I don't think regulation is the answer. The people writing the rules don't understand the technology. Even if they did, the field moves so fast that any law passed today would be obsolete in three months. That combination leaves us with slow, poorly informed rules that still manage to slow down the people trying to build safely. There's another problem. Regulation only works if it applies to everyone. One dangerous system is enough to cause real harm, so leaving open-source or overseas labs outside the rules defeats the point.
