Almost nobody using AI right now is doing it correctly, and it has nothing to do with the tools. Your AI problem isn't really about AI. It's about the data you never collected. The tools don't fall short. There's just nothing solid to feed them. I watch CEOs ask the same question over and over. What should I do with AI today? How do I integrate it? Where are the cost efficiencies, the profitability efficiencies? All reasonable. All the wrong question. For most small businesses to really use AI, the question is different. What can I do today to prepare me to use AI profitably in the future? Here's why that matters. AI is not human intelligence. It looks at patterns and data, finds the anomalies, and predicts. The current LLMs and transformer-based models everyone's excited about need data to make any inference at all. That one fact won't change. Without data, none of it is possible. And most small businesses have neglected data from day one. It's time consuming. It's expensive. It can feel overwhelming, so people quietly skip it and tell themselves they'll get to it later. What they miss is that they need data for tomorrow, not for today. So the CEO chasing a chatbot or a clever marketing gimmick is aiming at the wrong target. It looks great in a demo. It adds almost nothing to revenue. Look at where AI has already driven massive leaps: science and medicine. That came from taking huge, vast amounts of data and analysing it at a speed that's never been done before. Same technology. The businesses winning with it are the ones who understand how customers think, how they buy, which cohorts are worth acquiring, and which ones churn out before they ever pay back. That's the shift. It doesn't happen without the data underneath it. So sit down with someone who understands what AI can do and has an eye on the future. Ask them this: what can I do today to have the data I need to lead my industry with AI tomorrow? That's the question that lets you win. Your competitors are still asking the other one, and they'll keep collecting nothing while you build the thing that actually feeds the machine. Found this useful?
