So yesterday OpenAI announced a partnership with Axios to bring local news generated by ChatGPT. Does that sound like AI slop to you? The local news industry has been absolutely decimated. Quality journalism used to come from local newspapers. Digitization hit and they couldn't compete. They laid off their journalists. Those journalists fled to Substack and Medium. The quality of what passes for local news today is terrible. Before you complain about AI slop, the output from OpenAI on local news is bound to be way better than what exists now. That's not a bad thing. It's a little unclear who's coming up with the stories or how local stories will actually feed into ChatGPT. But I'm pretty sure the quality will be pretty good. Local news from ChatGPT is coming your way. There's nothing wrong with journalism produced by AI. Local news has been in absolute turmoil and something has to change. The status quo cannot hold.
